Distribute your blog with RSS (readers, directories, and email)

RSS is still the simplest way to follow a site without handing an algorithm your attention. This journal publishes a feed at https://thelittleluiz.me/rss.xml. Below is how to subscribe to it, and how to put the same URL in front of more readers.

What the feed actually is

An RSS file is a small XML document. Each item is a post: title, summary, date, and a permalink. When I publish a Markdown file under content/, the feed updates. You do not need an account on this site. You need a reader that polls the URL.

The HTML of every page also advertises the feed:

<link
  rel="alternate"
  type="application/rss+xml"
  title="Little Luiz"
  href="/rss.xml"
/>

Good readers use that tag (autodiscovery). If they do not, paste the URL by hand.

Subscribe in a reader

Pick one tool and stay there. The URL is always https://thelittleluiz.me/rss.xml.

  1. Feedly — Follow → “Follow a website” → paste the URL. Feedly often finds the feed from the homepage alone because of rel="alternate".
  2. Inoreader — Add subscription → paste the URL. Inoreader is strong if you want folders and rules.
  3. NewsBlur — Add site → paste the URL. Useful if you want the original site layout next to the feed.
  4. NetNewsWire (Mac / iOS) or Reeder — File → New feed → paste the URL. These stay on the device and work offline.

After you add it, open any item. The link should land on /blog/..., not on a tracking interstitial. If a reader cannot parse the file, validate it at W3C Feed Validation Service before you assume the reader is broken.

List the site in directories

Directories will not explode your traffic. They help people who still browse “new blogs” lists, and they give crawlers another path to the feed.

  • FeedSpot — Search for an existing category (software engineering, frontend, web3). Use their “Add a feed” / contact form. They want a live homepage, a valid RSS URL, and a few public posts. Approval can take days.
  • AllTop — Find a topic page close to your writing. Their submit flow asks for the site URL; they pull RSS if autodiscovery works. If a human reviews it, send the feed URL in the notes field so they do not have to guess.

Do not pay a random “we will submit you to 400 directories” service. Two real listings beat a pile of spam indexes.

Email without running a newsletter

This site does not send email. If you want posts in your inbox, use a bridge:

  • Blogtrottr — paste the feed, choose frequency, confirm the email.
  • Follow.it — similar idea, with an optional public follow page.

You are trusting that third party with your address. I would rather you use a reader, but email is a valid subscription if that is how you actually read.

Checklist before you submit anywhere

Use this on your own site too.

  1. Stable URL. /rss.xml (or /feed.xml) that will not move.
  2. Autodiscovery. link rel="alternate" on every page, not only the blog index.
  3. Valid XML. Titles and descriptions escaped (& becomes &amp;). Dates in RFC 822.
  4. Real permalinks. Each <link> is the public article URL.
  5. Frontmatter. Every post has title, description, and date so cards, SEO, and the feed share the same summary.
  6. A few posts already live. Directories bounce empty or single-post blogs.

That is the whole distribution loop: one honest feed, readers that pull it, a couple of directories that list it, and email only if someone asks for email.
